Oost-Vlieland is the only residential center on the beautiful Wadden Island of Vlieland, located in the northern province of Friesland. The island is bordered by the Wadden Sea to the south and the turbulent North Sea to the north. Geographically, Vlieland is the second island in the chain of Dutch Wadden Islands, situated between Texel and Terschelling. What makes Oost-Vlieland unique is its location right at the foot of high sand dunes, including the Vuurboetsduin, one of the highest dunes in the country. The village is elongated and its architecture breathes a historical atmosphere that recalls past times of seafaring and fishing.
The surroundings of Oost-Vlieland are characterized by an enormous diversity of landscapes. From vast sandy beaches stretching for miles to dense pine forests and the famous Vliehors, also known as the Sahara of the North. Because the island is largely car-free, the air quality remains exceptionally high and a serene tranquility prevails. The influence of the tides in the Friesland waters is noticeable everywhere; at low tide, large parts of the Wadden Sea dry up, providing a spectacular sight from the village quay. This dynamic ecosystem ensures that the island's geography is constantly in motion through the forces of wind and water.
When you watch the live footage of Oost-Vlieland, you see a village full of character. The main attraction is undoubtedly the lighthouse, the Vuurduin. This characteristic red tower stands on top of a high dune and offers a panoramic view over the Friesland coastline and the surrounding islands. The village itself is on the list of protected village views, and for good reason. The Dorpsstraat is the central artery of the village, flanked by beautiful historical buildings with authentic facades. Here you will also find Museum Tromp’s Huys, located in the oldest building in the village, where you can learn everything about the rich cultural history and famous former residents such as the sea painter Betzy Akersloot-Berg.
Another must-see is the Nicolaaskerk, an atmospheric building dating back to the 17th century. In the church, various maritime influences can be found, such as unique gravestones made from whale jaws. Walking along the harbor of Oost-Vlieland is also an attraction in itself. Here the ferries dock, and you see a constant stream of pleasure yachts and traditional sailing ships. For nature lovers, the Vliehors Express is an unforgettable experience; a trip with a special vehicle over the huge sand plain to the far west of the island, where you can often spot seals in their natural habitat.
Tourism is the main engine for Oost-Vlieland. Visitors come here primarily for peace, space, and the clean sea air. Since tourists are not allowed to bring their cars to the island, the bicycle is the favorite mode of transport. There is an extensive network of cycle paths that lead you through the dunes, forests, and along the salt marshes. The beaches of Vlieland are among the cleanest in the Netherlands and offer plenty of opportunities for long walks, sunbathing, or sporting activities such as kiting and beach sailing. In the village itself, there is a cozy buzz with numerous terraces, boutiques, and excellent restaurants where local specialties like sea bass and sea lavender are on the menu.
Throughout the year, various events are organized that attract thousands of visitors. The most famous is the 'Into the Great Wide Open' festival, where music and art come together in the island's natural surroundings. There is also plenty for sports enthusiasts, with various running events and sailing competitions. The tourist season runs from early spring to late autumn, but even in winter, peace seekers find their way to the island for a refreshing weekend. Hospitality on the island is great, and there is a wide range of accommodation, ranging from luxury hotels to cozy campsites in the middle of the dunes.
The bond between Oost-Vlieland and the rest of Friesland is unbreakable. Although the island is located in the North Sea, it feels thoroughly Frisian. The ferry connection from Harlingen is the lifeline that connects the island to the mainland. For many residents and frequent visitors, the crossing over the Wadden Sea is the start of a feeling of total relaxation. Friesland is known for its open landscapes and water-rich areas, and Vlieland is the crown jewel in that setting. The local culture is steeped in maritime traditions and a distinctive character that fits the island mentality.
Within the Frisian context, Vlieland also plays an important role in the field of nature conservation. Large parts of the island are managed by the Forestry Commission (Staatsbosbeheer), ensuring that flora and fauna are optimally protected. Rare plant species and countless bird species find their resting or breeding place here. For those who want to experience Friesland in its most pure and untouched form, a visit to Oost-Vlieland is highly recommended. Whether you come for the annual weather report from the beach or for the deep silence in the woods, the combination of Frisian down-to-earthness and the magical island atmosphere makes every trip to this part of the Netherlands a unique experience that will stay with you for a long time.
