The Line Between Day and Night

Right now, exactly half of our planet is bathed in sunlight while the other half rests in darkness. The boundary between these two states is called the terminator line — a soft curve that sweeps continuously across the globe as the Earth spins on its axis.

This isn't a fixed line. It shifts constantly throughout the day, and its shape changes with the seasons: in June, the terminator tilts to keep the Northern Hemisphere bathed in long daylight hours, while in December the tilt reverses in favor of the south.

Why This Matters

  • Time zones in context: See at a glance why it's morning in Tokyo while New York is still asleep.

  • Seasons visualized: Watch how the shape of the daylight zone stretches and shrinks throughout the year.

  • Golden hour hunting: The edge of the terminator is where sunrise and sunset are happening right now, somewhere on Earth.

The map below recalculates the terminator live, based on the current position of the sun relative to the Earth. The shaded area shows where it's currently night.
