Climate and Nature

Turkmenistan experiences an extreme continental desert climate featuring scorching, dry summers and cold winters. Roughly 80% of the land is covered by the vast Karakum Desert. Natural landmarks range from the dramatic, multicolored cliffs of the Yangykala Canyons to the rugged Kopet Dag mountains along the Iranian border and Caspian Sea coastlines.

Culture and Gastronomy

Turkmen culture blends ancient nomadic traditions with skilled craftsmanship, famously celebrated for handwoven Turkmen carpets and the revered Akhal-Teke horses. Gastronomy is hearty and centered on meat and grains; signature dishes include Plov (lamb rice pilaf), Işleklı (traditional desert meat pie), Mantı dumplings, and ubiquitous green tea service.

Economy

The economy of Turkmenistan is built upon holding some of the largest natural gas reserves worldwide (anchored by the massive Galkynysh field) alongside crude oil exports. Agriculture also forms a key pillar, focused on cotton farming irrigated via the extensive Karakum Canal. State ownership remains dominant across key industrial sectors.
