Climate and Nature

Iran features a predominantly arid to semi-arid climate with hot summers and cold winters, yet exhibits extreme geographical contrast. The northern Caspian coast hosts dense subtropical Hyrcanian forests, contrasting with central desert basins. High mountain ranges like the Alborz and Zagros chains receive heavy snowfall throughout the winter.

Culture and Gastronomy

Persian culture represents one of the world's oldest civilizations, renowned for classical poetry (Rumi, Hafez), intricate architecture, calligraphy, and hand-woven Persian carpets. Gastronomy emphasizes delicate herb blends and saffron. Key dishes include Ghormeh Sabzi, Fesenjan (walnut pomegranate stew), assorted Kebabs, and Tachin rice cakes.

Economy

Iran's economy relies significantly on vast petroleum and natural gas reserves, holding some of the largest global deposits. Secondary economic drivers include petrochemical manufacturing, agricultural exports (such as pistachios and saffron), mining, and handknotted Persian rugs.

Did you know?

  • Iran produces over 90% of the world's total supply of saffron, making it the dominant global hub for the precious spice.
  • Mount Damavand (5,610m) in the Alborz range is the highest volcano in all of Asia, attracting international mountaineers and ski-tourers.
  • NASA satellite measurements have repeatedly recorded the Lut Desert (Dasht-e Lut) as one of the hottest land surfaces on Earth, exceeding 70°C.
  • Yazd is world-famous for its ancient 'Badgirs' (windcatchers), remarkable traditional architectural structures designed for natural air conditioning.
  • The Persian New Year, Nowruz, coincides with the vernal equinox (around March 21) and has been celebrated continuously for over 3,000 years.
