Climate and Nature
Burundi experiences an equatorial highland climate with comfortable, mild temperatures due to its high elevation. The landscape is famously hilly and mountainous, earning Burundi the nickname "Land of a Thousand and One Hills." It borders Lake Tanganyika to the west and is home to lush montane rainforests and savanna parks.
Culture and Gastronomy
Burundi's cultural pride centers on its historic royal drumming heritage (Ingoma), inscribed on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage list. Gastronomy is built around local agriculture and fresh catches from Lake Tanganyika. Popular staples include Ugali (cassava or cornmeal mash), Mukeke fish, fried plantains (Igitoke), and peanut-flavored bean stews.
Economy
The economy of Burundi is largely based on subsistence agriculture, employing a major portion of the workforce. Coffee and tea represent the principal agricultural exports. In addition, Lake Tanganyika provides vital commercial fishing and transport connections for the region.
