Climate and Nature

Botswana features a predominantly semi-arid climate with hot summers and mild, dry winters. Around 70% of its land area is covered by the Kalahari Desert. Its natural environment is stunningly diverse, ranging from arid sand dunes and vast salt flats to the lush, watery ecosystem of the Okavango Delta, the world's largest inland delta.

Culture and Gastronomy

Botswana's culture is deeply rooted in the traditions of the Batswana people, characterized by warmth, music, folklore, and traditional dance. The local cuisine is simple and nourishing, with 'Seswaa' (slow-cooked, pounded beef or goat meat) as the national dish. It is typically served alongside 'Bogobe' (sorghum or maize porridge) and Morogo (wild spinach).

Economy

Botswana stands as one of Africa's most stable and prosperous economies. Economic growth is driven primarily by diamond mining (in partnership with De Beers), cattle farming, and high-end eco-tourism. The country deliberately focuses on low-impact, high-value tourism to protect its pristine wilderness.

Did you know?

  • The national currency 'Pula' literally translates to 'rain' in Setswana, highlighting how precious water is in this desert country.
  • The Okavango Delta is the world's largest inland delta, emptying not into a sea or ocean, but evaporating into the sands of the Kalahari.
  • Botswana is home to the largest free-ranging elephant population on Earth, mostly concentrated within Chobe National Park.
  • The Tsodilo Hills are referred to as the "Louvre of the Desert" due to harboring over 4,500 rock paintings by ancient San bushmen.
  • It is one of the least densely populated countries globally, averaging just around 4 to 5 people per square kilometer.
